Composting - making a Right Good Job of it ...

  1. Find the Right Site
Site your bin in a sunny spot, preferable on soil. This will encourage the worms and other organisms to help you create your compost.
  2. Use the Right Materials
Fill your bin with vegetable and garden waste. A rule of thumb is to use that which will rot and that includes peel, cores and skin of fruit, leaves and windfall from the garden, grass cuttings and a whole heap more. Don't add meat, fish, dairy products,or bread to your bin as this will just encourage animals to get into your bin.
  3. Keep the Moisture Right
Keep enough moisture in the bin to encouage the degradation of all the materials. if it is too wet, it will smell. If it is too dry, it will not degrade. Your bin should not attract bees, wasps or bluebottles. It might attract fruit flies. Ensure that you have added enough water to encourage the rotting process.
  4. Activate it Right
Add a composting activator, such as can be bought at Garden Centres, or make yor own.
  5. Use it Right
Compost can take between 6 months to a year to make. When you use it to pot plants, mix one part sand with two parts of sterilized soil or loam, and two parts finished compost to give yourself a perfect mixture.
